Throttle and Clutch Cables

Spare Throttle / Clutch Cables

One of the things that can potentially break on motorcycles are the clutch and throttle cables. Without them, the bike cannot be used as they are required constantly. Both of these parts are very specific to the make and model of the bike and will be hard to get hold of on the road.

Both for ease of carrying them and in case they are required, they can be run alongside the original ones and just connected, saving time by the side of the road. Electrical tape was wound around either end of the new cables to keep then in good condition.

Throttle cable (original in green, new in red)

Routing the throttle cable required removal of the coolant overflow tank and threading through the hold marked in red. Doing this is quite challenging as both old and new will not fit through. The trick is to unscrew the connector and slide it along the cable and then to thread it through before rescrewing the connector on. It would be clear what is meant if the parts are in front of you!

Clutch cables (red is new, green is original). Take care that the new cable end does not interfere with the old one.

Update: The clutch cable went when the bike had 27,000 miles on it. Only took 10 mins to change it.
