GPS

Satellite Navigation (and camera mount)

Paper maps are the preferred means of navigation as they are one of the few means of getting a real sense of space and location. Knowing where one is on a map is not always as easy, and it is for this that GPS is really useful. Additionally, cities are made up of many side streets and having a detailed enough map and being able to locate a specific destination may not be straight forward. Often streetsigns with be non-existent or illegible.

The Garmin Quest handheld GPS was the chosen model. It measures only 11x5.5x2cm and can also be run from batteries.

The Garmin maps are somewhat limited in remote areas, however a talented fellow overland biker has put together the "Wanderlust Worldmap" which give significantly better coverage, all for the small cost of £25!

To facilitate use on the bike, a RAM mount has been fitted, for which a camera mount has also been bought so that photographs can be taken whilst in motion!

RAM powered GPS cradle mount

The power for the cradle was taken directly from the battery. The provided wire was cut and a semi-waterproof plug was installed so that the cradle could be removed when not in use. This plug is 'hidden' inside the handlebar padded tube cover.

Camera Mount (uses the RAM base with an adaptor to allow the Rider to take photographs when moving and to be used as a tripod when stationary).
