Lights

Head light & Tail light

It is important that the Riders can see and be seen by other road users, especially in lower visibility areas and times of the day.

Head light

Travel at night is not planned due to the obvious dangers. A simple upgrade to the light bulb was made to improve both my visibility of the road and other road-users' ability to see me. The replacement bulb is the Osram Super 55/60w, which gives 30% more light that the BMW supplied one. It does not require rewiring as it does not draw any more current than the factory one.

Update from the road: Even with this bulb, the standard headlamp is sub-standard. Firstly, the whole glass assembly vibrates loose from the plastic housing, meaning that alignment is not possible and that it just shines up at the sky and secondly, it is just not bright enough. Other 650 riders have had the same experiences. Perhaps when I return home, or for a future trip, I would upgrade to a HID or add a spot lamp. Whilst I never intended to ride at night, there were a handful of occasions when I was caught out. For these alone, it would have been a valuable modification.

Tail / Stop Light

The stop/tail light was upgraded upon return to an LED bulb with results as below (taken from around 4 metres distance then cropped). Apparently, a red bulb is better than a clear bulb when the lens glass is red. One downside noted from doing this is that the number plate is now lit by a red light as opposed to a white one.

Initial thoughts are that the LED bulb is redder but have yet to decide if it is any brighter. I went for the 24 LED version. Perhaps the 36 version would have been better.
