Chain Guard / Wheel Sensor Cover

The chain must be lubricated with oil, which itself can be 'flung' off as it rotates at speed. To keep the bottom of the bike clean as well as keeping the oil off of the rear tyre, a guard is required.

The BMW factory chain/mudguard wraps around the rear tyre as a kind of bumper. This is for German licensing purposes. The downside of the BMW one is that it needs to be removed for tyre changing and that on bumpy surfaces, it can move and get caught up with the wheel. The options were to buy a Touratech aluminium version or to cut down the existing plastic one. Results as per the photographs. The cut down version seems to be quite stable and light weight. One section has been left to cover the wheel sensor and the other to cover the chain.

These were simply cut off with a saw and then sanded down around the edges. When choosing where to cut off the chain guard, take care to ensure that it is not loose enough to vibrate into the path of the chain.

Another area of exposure on the F650 GS is the rear master brake cylinder. Whilst aftermarket covers are available from various companies (at a relatively high cost), the BMW part for the 1200 GS fits this bike perfectly at a fraction of the cost.
