Footpegs and Side Stand

In road use, the footpegs are merely a place to rest the feet. For off-road use, the Rider must stand up and control the direction and balance of the bike via weight distribution on the footpegs. They must therefore be both strong and comfortable. The sidestand is to make sure that when unattended, the bike does not fall over.

The footpegs were upgraded and widened for more comfort during long sections of having to stand up on off-road.

Part of this modification was to change the sidestand. The standard BMW fitted one is not very strong and results in the bike leaning at quite an angle (not good when the panniers are fully loaded). An additional benefit of the new sidestand is a larger footprint so that it is less likely to sink into soft ground.

Update from the road: The more upright sidestand has proven to be invaluable. Other riders have had problems with the factory sidestand breaking. The only problem has been that when parking on the right hand side of the road, when there is a camber, it can stand too upright.
