Steering Head Bearings

One of the known problems with the BMW F650GS series of bikes is the steering head bearings, which is renowned to be fitted with poor quality parts. This is the bearing which allows the steering to rotate smoothly.

Whilst the Rider's bike has only travelled 10,000 miles, the steering head bearings (SHB) were replaced. It is difficult to judge the extent to which SHB's have deteriorated, so they were changed as a preventative measure. At the time of change, there was significant wear. As per the photograph, the old ones were found to be badly 'notched'. This means that effectively, when turning, the steering clicks from one angle to the next. Interestingly, the old parts were from a good quality manufacturer. The mechanic that changed them suggested that it was due to the factory overtightening the headstock bolt. Having had the SHB's changed has certainly added comfort given that they are a known weak point.
