Tyres

The requirements for tyres are demanding for a trip such as this. They must be hard wearing whilst still giving grip both on road and off-road. these are not two attributes that go hand in hand. The impact of punctures can be averted by using tubed tyres, which can be repaired more easily than tubeless ones.

Tyres of choice are the Metzeler Tourance. This is due to their flexibility for on-road and gravel riding. For off-road, the Continental TKC 80 tyres are ideal, however no extended significant off-road portions are anticipated. If such routes are encountered, the policy of taking time and of lowering tyre pressures will be used!

Update from the road: The first set of Tourances lasted for 17,956 miles. At the time of replacement, they were probably good for another one to two thousand miles. They had been used on surfaces from gravel to tarmac and through sand and water crossings. They were replaced with the same make and model. The second set only lasted 11,000 miles due to the straight roads in Australia.
