Base Layer For travel in a variety of climates, clothing must be carried for both hot and cold conditions. The trick to doing this and travelling light is to wear layers and double up where extra warmth is required. If the clothing can be breathable and quick drying, then it is even more suitable. The Rider has chosen Icebreaker as the supplier for all base layer clothing. It fits all of the criteria in terms of comfort, quick drying, breathability and temperature management. So much does the Rider favour Icebreaker that all non-outerwear clothing is from Icebreaker (except for socks)! The Rider would like to thank Icebreaker for providing a couple of the tops. These vary in weight from 190 weight to 320 weight, which should allow for everything from hiking in the mountains of Nepal in freezing temperatures to riding in 50 degree heat in India. Icebreaker boasts that its products can be worn for up to 156 days consecutively and still not smell. Hopefully, testing to this extreme will not be required! After having travelled with Icebreaker clothing for almost 3 months now, I can confirm that it has proven to be an excellent choice. It keeps me extremely warm in the cold (particularly when layered), is light weight and wicks away moisture in the heat experienced since Kazakhstan, which has frequently been up in the 40's. As I only travel with 4 days' clothing, it is necessary to wash it frequently, and it both dries quickly and shows little sign of wear from frequent use. |
