Adventure Motorcycling, Chris Scott The basics of planning, from choosing a bike, to deciding where to go, to understanding the paperwork involved. Also, quite a few handy tips for life on the road. Riding the World, Greg Frazier Detail on equipping and modifying the bike for the trip as well as useful 'on the road' experience.
Bugs, Bites & Bowels, Cadogan Guides Recommended by my doctor as an excellent guide to tropical diseases, illness on the road and how to keep in good health. An ingenious idea! Passport sized book (5mm thick) containing 60 pages and images of thousands of objects from food to hotels (with single/double beds) to batteries. No need to know the non-English word for everything. Just point (of course, learning some local language to supplement will help!). Do's and Taboos Around the World Explains the cultures and interaction in locations around the world. What's polite to do/say, what's rude etc. This book gently introduces the Russian language and alphabet. Most other books seem to drop you in at the deep end. A tough language to learn, but easier with the right encouragement.
