Servicing Both before departure and on the road, various people helped us fix our bikes up. As you can imagine, when taking your bike to remote parts of the world, it is often difficult to find a mechanic or workshop that you can trust. Most routing servicing was carried out by the Riders, however the below either provided the use of their workshops or carried out more complicated jobs and come very highly recommended. Many thanks to each and every one of them for their help.
Alex from Ibble Engineering (Croydon) can carry out prep servicing. Alex will let you watch and help out. This is good to help you learn what to do and build confidence.
Alex did the servicing and fitted a number of parts to the bikes of both Riders. He only charged £25 per hour (you supply the parts). He paid plenty of attention to detail and works at a fair pace. As a guide, a full service with oil, valves, brake fluids and coolant took under 4 hours. He changed the steering head bearings and wheel bearings in under 2 hours. Alex is located in Croydon and is a qualified mechanic with an independent workshop. He came recommended to the Rider by a motorcycle maintenance instructor at Merton College.
His contact number is: 07847 286 779 (company name is Ibble Engineering) Please tell him that Charles sent you!
Almaty, Kazakhstan - My Town Motors For servicing (workshop and assistance) in Almaty, Kazakhstan, try My Town Motors at GPS co-ords N43 12.369 E76 54.207. Zhorokova Street 272.
For servicing (workshop and assistance) in Pune, India, Sheri Bhathena. About the only person that I found who was familiar with bigger motorcycles. He used to race in the TT and pretty much knows his way around. 12B Sadhu Vaswani Road, Pune. Tel. 26124844 or 98500 57477.
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia - Sunny Cycle
Sunny and his son run this great workshop, which is both clean and used by many of the locals for their trailies and sports bikes (often including race prepping). I trusted them enough to get my valve clearances checked, the throttle body and the fuel injectors cleaned. Most mechanics that I have met to date would not have been trusted to take the bike apart to that extent. Sunny can also order tyres for you at very good prices. This includes Metzeler Tourances. As a guide, their tyres are less than that charged in most European discount shops! Call him in advance and he can get them in for you. Sunny will also give you use of his workshop for you to do your own servicing. Sunny Cycle can be found at 37 Jalan Pahang (Titiwangsa), Setapak 5300, KL, Malaysia. Tel. 03-4021 1661. sunnycycle@time.net.my. GPS co-ords N03 10.766 E101 42.068.
BMW Malaysia Contrary to the BMW Mottorad website, there is a BMW dealer in KL - www.autobavaria.com are both in KL and Penang and can get you parts as well as being able to do servicing (at BMW prices!). The KL dealership is near Bukit Bintang, whilst the workshop is out of town at GPS co-ords N03 04.953 E101 34.132. Both Kamarul (in KL dealership) and Lim (in Penang) are very welcoming and helpful to overlanders.
