Charles has been riding motorcycles for 9 years, starting with scooters, but soon moving on to sports bikes. After some touring and the desire to reach more adventurous destinations, 'multi-purpose' bikes were added to the list!
This trip has now been in planning for 4 years although initially as more of a dream. In the past 2 years, due to various things, the opportunity arose for it to become a reality. In the year prior to departure, planning stepped up a notch and preparation managed to consume almost all daily thoughts!
In terms of personal preparation for the trip, Charles studied Motorcycle Maintenance at Merton College (one evening a week over 30 weeks), as well as taking the BMW Off-Road Skills Training course in Wales (very highly recommended).
Previous adventure travel (without a motorcycle) has been extensive and includes Argentina, Iceland, Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and China.
Coming originally from the banking and investment world, it was time for a change of scene, which took Charles in the direction of consulting. This introduced a world of flexibility and opened up the opportunity to actually DO this trip. For most other careers, taking a year out to achieve a life dream, one would find little to return to!
